The Torres Strait People have a solid and significant connection to the land and nature, and their respect for its purpose and powerful existence, is demonstrated through Rita Pryce’s and The Baiwa Dance Company’s, latest production, ‘Warupaw Uu – Echo of Drums’.

This brand new theatrical show will be performed on Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th of August at the Cairns Centre of Contemporary Arts to contribute to the celebrations of Cairns indigenous Art Fair 2013.

Audiences have described this performance as “powerful, beautiful and energising”. Pryce says the name “Echo of Drums” is a tribute to the cultural traditions that have been passed down through hundreds of generations.

Throughout her youth spent in the Torres Straights, Rita often wondered how her Grandfather knew his way home through the rough seas in the darkness…

Rita believes that the Baiwa Dance Company’s influential performances come from the dancers who represent the traditional culture of the Torres Strait people.

The artwork used and displayed throughout the show is all made by Torres Strait Islander master craftsmen and all music is that of original work by the late Billy Missi.
