Cairns are you ready… it’s time to Party!
Posted on August 14, 2013 by Sophie Tabouel
The Cairns Festival is back and set to kick off on Saturday the 24th of August and to finish on 1st September. This year’s festival will be packed with activities that will challenge you all… but a fun challenge none the less. Cairns Festival kicks off the week with free kids (and ‘big kids’) activities at the Cairns Lagoon, including the TropOlympics with traditional North Queensland events such as inflatable croc races and coconut bowling. The James Cook University Parade commences at 5.30pm with a mix of floats and performers bouncing and flouncing their way down the Esplanade to Fogarty Park celebrating “Living in Paradise”, this year’s festival theme. The fireworks erupt at 7.30pm with the sound of oohs and ahs heard across the Esplanade and dance the night away with more free gigs playing into the night.
Once you have recovered from the first day celebrations check out the program for the rest of the week. Take a look at some ongoing art demos and displays, ‘Off The Wall’ live Graffiti at the Salthouse Restaurant and Bar and ‘Chalk The Walk’ with Australia’s Champion Pavement Artist, Andi Mether, on the Esplanade. Everyday you will hear the funky tunes of bands and DJ’s rocking the Cairns Lagoon area with free concerts all week. Keep the kids busy with workshops, outside cinema, arts and storytelling, even the chance to learn a few circus moves to impress the friends… did I mention FREE!
If you feel like slowing the pace a little, cruise over to the ‘Cairns Regional Gallery’ or ‘The Tanks Art Centre’ to check out some impressive art exhibitions or join a daily morning bird watching tour to see a variety of our local feathered friends. Want a little romance? Catch a flick under the stars with your loved one or a little Jazz at the beautiful ‘Cairns Botanic Gardens’. Now if this isn’t enough how about a traditional cane burn off at Blazing Saddles with local band the ‘Hillbilly Goats’ and a spit roast pig, or what about a fire twirling spectacular wisely held on the Lagoon Sandpit! In amongst all this make sure you don’t forget the ‘Underwater Film Festival’ at the Cairns Civic Theatre showcasing the best flicks and pics of the underwater world.
Make sure you get yourself a program to be able to plan your week of festivities and help the North Queenslanders celebrate “Living in Paradise”!
