Posted on July 26, 2014 by Melanie Blight
Get your run on at the Canecutter’s Great Barrier Reef Marathon. Whether you’re a serious contender or want to have a bit of fun for a good cause, this year’s marathon in the tropical town of Port Douglas has 6 races for you to choose from, or simply be a much appreciated spectator. Races ranging from 2.5km for the kids to the 74km marathon have been constructed so that all races start and finish in Port Douglas, a great way to compete and also cheer for your fellow competitors in alternative races.
For The Kids
A free 2.5km run for the kids starting at 9am, entries can be made on the morning of the event from 7am and an optional gold coin donation will be given to charity. The kids have 4 age categories to compete in including under 14, under 12, under 10 and under 8. Winners of each age group will take home a trophy and all junior competitors will receive a certificate and ribbon.
For Everyone
Have a laugh, come in costume and raise money for the Great Barrier Reef Research Fund. This 5km course loops around itself so as you are competing you can get a good look at all of your fellow competitors in their fancy dress. Invitations go out to all for this race, bring bubs in prams and run as a family the only rule is to complete the race in under 1.5 hours. There will be prizes offered for the most outstanding participants, so be imaginative! Register early for $25.00 or on the day for $35.00, kids under 10 run for free!
For the Newbies
Why not challenge yourself this year and compete in the 10km Newsport race. A great race for those starting out in the world of competitive running and who knows this may lead to half marathons, marathons and ultra marathon events in the future. Pre-registration is required and is $50.00 for the early bird, you must be over 12 and competitors must finish the course in 1.5 hours. The course starts at 6.30am on the picturesque Four Mile Beach and loops around to return through town. Prizes for the 1st male and female across the line! Grab your free training diary by Clicking Here and get out there and hit that pavement!
For the Serious Marathon Runners
Register for Half, Full or the Ultra marathon and test your limits with some of the most gruelling but extremely scenic tracks around the Port Douglas region.
The Half Marathon stretches to just under 22 km and must be completed in under 4 hours to officially complete the race and receive a commemorative medal. Starting at 6.30am on stunning Four Mile Beach the course stretches up into the Mowbray Valley looping back around and finishing back in Port Douglas town. Register early for $100.00 and retrieve a half marathon training diary developed by ‘Steve Moneghetti’ by Clicking Here
The Full Marathon is named after the Australian running legend ‘Steve Moneghetti’ who has competed in this event for the past 3 years. Challenge yourself against this great athlete by competing in the 42 km race, cut off time is 8 hours to officially complete this marathon and receive a commemorative medal. The course starts on Four Mile Beach and takes competitors through an array of environments including the Mowbray Valley along creek sides, around cane fields and part of the challenging Bump Tracks which has the steepest ascent during the race. Early bird registration price is $150.00 and kits will be available the day before.
Over 50 super athletes registered for the Ultra Marathon last year and is strictly for well-prepared competitors. This 74km hard core marathon sees challengers running the full length of the bump track with incredibly steep ascents of 350m for the first 2km this is designed for the fittest of the fit. A new course in 2014 will commence in Port Douglas rather than at James Cook University, competitors will navigate their way through cement paths, trails, along the Black Mountain Ridge, through Mowbray and Kuranda National Parks, beside creek sides and will complete the race back on Four Mile Beach with what will be sure a grand welcome by supporting friends and family. Register early for $200.00 into your age group, winners will receive prizes and all that complete the race will receive commemorative medals.
