The Beautiful Fitzroy Island… So Close Yet So Far!
Posted on November 14, 2016 by Jordan Squire
3 days a week I work at the lovely Hilton Hotel tour desk in Cairns Tropical North Queensland Australia and my job is to help plan guests activities whilst they are visiting our beautiful region.
As part of that job I need to get out and about myself and luckily for me I get to do all my tours and attractions with the support of the tour operators. They invite me along on tours when they have space so that I can experience what they offer for myself so that I can then make the right choices and recommendations for my guests.
I am one of The Tour Specialists based on the Great Barrier Reef.
Recently on my day off I decided to visit Fitzroy Island with my husband. Fitzroy Island Ferry departs Cairns Marlin Marina 3 times daily from Cairns Marlin Marina (A Finger, Berth 20) so you can either enjoy a full day or a half day snorkeling, diving, kayaking, hiking, swimming or just relaxing on Fitzroy Island.
Choose from the following departure times: 8:00am, 11:00am or 1:30pm
And return from Fitzroy Island at either 12:15pm or 5:00pm (there is a 9:30am transfer back to Cairns for guests staying overnight at the Fitzroy Island Resort).
We chose the 11:00am ferry from Cairns and returned with the 5:00pm boat.
After walking down the jetty at A- Finger one of the friendly and confident staff members from the Fitzroy Ferry welcomed us and checked us in.
There are plenty of outside seats upstairs in the fresh air, but we went down the stairs and took our seats in the air-conditioned part of the ferry. Here they have a licensed bar where you can purchase beverages and snacks.
The journey is a quiet relaxing 45 minutes ride to Welcome Bay. The vessel travelled close to the scenic mainland that’s why most days it’s a very quiet crossing to the Island.
On the way out the crew gave us a brief of what to expect and we were informed that the Island has extensive rainforest, self-guided walks, snorkeling (you can hire your snorkelling equipment on Fitzroy Island), glass bottom boat tours, sea kayaking , and a sandy beach.
You can also use the fun in-ocean trampoline & paddle skis if they are available. The islands resort has a general store and a great café (Roxy’s)… for lunch, drinks snacks or just a place to chill.
Whilst there you simply must visit and make a donation to the Turtle Rehabilitation Center! They rescue sick and injured turtles rehabilitating them and then releasing them back into the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
Did you know if we did not have turtles the ocean would be full of jelly fish?
So much to do…
You can purchase just the ferry ticket and do your own thing for the day on the island or you could buy a great activities package that includes an ocean safari tour in kayaks, you can buy a lunch package and you can even do an introductory dive.
You can even book a weekend or a longer stay on the island and we have some exclusive holiday deals for you to take a peek at here.
After spending over 5 hours at this beautiful, unique and peaceful island, relaxing on the beach and snorkeling with the turtles and many species of fishes it was time for us to walk back to the jetty and head home.
As the boat slowly moved away from the island and the sun began to sink behind the Cairns rainforest clad mountains I took a few pictures of the beautiful island as we headed off into the distance.
We both had such a wonderful and relaxing day and we could imagine bringing kids and family here for a great day for everyone.
At 5:45pm our boat docked back in Cairns. Now I have seen and experienced the island for myself I can now highly recommend booking a day trip or overnight stay on Fitzroy Island.
There is absolutely something for everyone including families with young children only wanting to spend half a day so it is not too much for the little ones, to the grandparents and to the active young backpackers who like to be exuberant and have fun.
The staff at Fitzroy Island Ferry was very friendly making the whole experience very enjoyable; I only stayed the day but I felt like I had been on a holiday.
