The Truth About Port Douglas
Posted on November 6, 2014 by Sophie Tabouel

Port Douglas became very well known as the rich and famous playground of northern Australia in the early eighties when the infamous Christopher Skase built the beautiful sprawling golf resort Sheraton Mirage and the Mirage waterfront marina that now supports a huge flotilla of both private and commercial boats that take holiday makers out to the Great Barrier Reef each day.
He also planted magnificent towering palm trees that herald your arrival coming into Port Douglas which give you the sense you are certainly arriving at some place special. Once other investors heard about the big plans for this once small quaint fishing village in Tropical North Queensland they all wanted a piece of the action and flocked to Port Douglas to start building more luxury resorts, hotels and supporting infrastructure like shops, restaurants and other tourism facilities.
Today Port Douglas is home to a large number of permanent residents that migrated from the southern states once they discovered this little piece of paradise and a great number of them work within the tourism and hospitality industry showing off their backyard to our visitors now.
Port Douglas is only 70 kilometres north ward from the Cairns International Airport along one of Australia’s most spectacular scenic coastal drives.
Port Douglas sits on a peninsular surrounded on the eastern side by the famous Four Mile Beach and the western side is the river and boat marina and the northern tip is dominated by the majestic cliff faces that support the holiday homes of the rich and famous from all over the world with a few permanent families in residence with all of them overlooking the Low Isles and the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
The choices of holiday accommodation in Port Douglas vary from your backpacker dorm style accommodation to the top end private holiday homes, luxury villas and international hotels and self -catering apartment style resorts.
