Thousands in Cairns for Chinese New Year 2014 – Year of the Horse
Posted on January 24, 2014 by Sophie Tabouel

Did you know 2014 is the Chinese year of the horse and people born in 2014 are said to be nobel, smart and free spirited?
The 2014 celebrations in Cairns will carry over a 3 week period starting on the 24th of January through till the 16th of February. Festivities include traditional Chinese dining, the ever popular street festival, a monster raffle and a kite exhibition.
Chinese New Year Street Festival
In 2004 the Cairns and District Chinese Association Inc started a celebration in the streets of Cairns for Chinese New Year in what used to be the original China Town Precinct. Over the years the festival has become extremely popular and is now one of the biggest events of the year attracting 15,000 people in 2013. Grafton Street comes alive with a parade featuring traditional Chinese lion and dragon dancing, the 12 Zodiac Animals, fire crackers, music, market and food stalls, creating a unique cultural experience for locals and visitors to enjoy. There will also be children’s activities making this a fun family event! Look out for tickets on sale at the festival for the monster raffle, heaps of great prizes donated by local Cairns companies.
The free Chinese new Year festival will take place on Saturday the 1st of February2014 from 4pm with the parade starting at 5pm on Grafton Street between Shield and Spence Streets.
